Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher properly can be the difference between a small incident and a major emergency.
When a fire breaks out, every second matters. Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher properly can be the difference between a small incident and a major emergency. That’s why understanding the PASS method is a crucial fire safety skill for everyone, both at home or at work.
In this blog, the Fireco team explains what the PASS method is, how to use it correctly, and when it’s safe to use a fire extinguisher.
What is the PASS Method?
PASS is a simple four-step process to help you remember how to operate a fire extinguisher:
- Pull the pin
- Aim the nozzle
- Squeeze the handle
- Sweep from side to side
This method works for most standard portable fire extinguishers, including those found in homes, businesses, vehicles, and public buildings across New Zealand.
How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: Step-by-Step
- Pull the pin
Hold the extinguisher upright and remove the safety pin near the handle. This pin prevents accidental discharge. - Aim low
Point the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire. This targets the fuel, not just the flames. - Squeeze the handle
Firmly squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent. - Sweep from side to side
Move the nozzle in a controlled, sweeping motion at the base of the fire. Continue until the fire is fully extinguished or the extinguisher runs out.
When Should You Use a Fire Extinguisher?
Use a fire extinguisher only if:
- The fire is small and contained (for example, in a bin or on a stovetop)
- You have a clear exit route and can evacuate safely
- You’ve already called 111 or alerted someone to do so
- You are confident you’re using the right type of extinguisher for the fire
If there’s any uncertainty, evacuate immediately and let emergency services handle it.
Types of Fire Extinguishers and Why They Matter
